The Friends of the Library Newsletter
The Librarian’s Notebook
Thanks to our wonderful Friends group, we have many exciting new additions to our collection here or on the way. When I presented the Friends with my current “Wish List” of items beyond this year’s budget, they wowed me by deciding to provide the funds to purchase:
- AnimalsAnimals — primary level children’s series
- AnimalWays — older level children’s series
- Primary Sources in American History — children’s series
- Lifeways — American Indian tribes children’s series
- Great Inventions — children’s series
- Language learning systems — CD in French, Italian and Spanish
- Aviation Century series on flight

Our animal life books are a focus of collection development this year, and the Friends will also be sponsoring a fundraiser to purchase the top zoological reference set, Grzimek’s Animal Life Encyclopedia.
The Friends are also coming to the rescue of staff backs with the purchase of two ergonomic work chairs.
Thank you all!

July 4 Book Sale and Fundraiser
Wednesday, July 4, from 9 to 12, please come to our famous book sale at Bowden Hall! We always offer a large assortment of mint-condition, well-sorted books for sale at bargain prices.
At the sale, we’ll be launching a fundraiser to purchase a complete set of Grzimek’s Animal Life Encyclopedia for the library’s reference collection. You can sign up to buy an entire volume of the set, or donate toward a volume. Donations of $20 or more will be recognized by an inscription on bookplates for each volume.

Lila Hays (at 4.5 months) enjoys a reading of Goodnight Moon. Lila’s parents are Wendy and Dan Hays of Brooklin.
Books for Babies
Our beautiful library tote bags now contain one more well-loved book when they go out to Brooklin’s newborns. A board book version of Goodnight Moon has been added to the Books for Babies gift bag.
If you know of any new babies in Brooklin, please let us know. We'd love to add them to our circle of friends! Call the library at 359-2276 or Nancy Randall at 359-8587.

Springing Forward in the Garden
When warm weather finally put in an appearance in early May, the Friends’ garden volunteers turned out in full force, raking, weeding, and coaxing the garden into shape for the summer. The library couldn’t manage without these dedicated gardeners, so please give them a big “Thanks!”

Wicker Chairs Thank You
The Wicker Chair Restoration Project is now complete, thanks to the specialized work of several craftsmen coordinated by Mid Coast Fine Antiques in Holden. Ten chairs received structural work, wicker replacement, and stain as needed. A plaque on display at the library recognizes the generous donors who made this project possible. We are grateful to all of you.
More Thank Yous
Thanks also to these volunteers...
John Bradford, who designed and built a splendid new cabinet for the library entry to hold our collection of magazines donated by patrons and available for sharing.
Ann Brayton for her contribution of special fabrics for banners.
Sharon and Jerry Waddell from Twin Falls, Idaho, for working at our January Book Sale during their first visit to Maine.
Harry Beattie for his consistent and cheerful help in transporting books to storage.
Ken and Polly Pratt for painting the library sign and reconditioning the garden benches.
Things to do
Summer is a great time to explore our library and its resources, and “Adventure Quest” is a fun way to do so. Ask at the front desk... you might win a $25 gift certificate from Blue Hill Books! (Gabe Allen, age 5, and Michelle Keyo are our winners so far.)
Tuesdays at noon, bring your lunch and join us for lunch and a chat in the library's back room, and then help us for a few minutes to sort book-sale books or restock shelves in the entry.
Library note cards, postcards, and canvas book bags are available for sale at the front desk. Your purchases will help us fund library projects.
